Glass Mosaic Tile Floors
Once upon a time glass tile was viewed as a fragile material, unsuitable for use as a floor covering. No sane homeowner would consider putting ‘delicate glass’ under their feet where it would be stomped on day after day by muddy boots and stiletto heals. At the same time, glass
floors were commonly found in hotel lobbies and public buildings. Their classic designer look combined with their durability and resistance to stains made them a great option for high traffic areas that needed to look clean and professional with minimal maintenance.
Over time home decorators and contractors got the picture and began to incorporate glass tile floors into their homes and small businesses. But although glass tile floors have risen in popularity many still remain wary. We consistently receive emails and phone calls questioning if glass tile can be used on floors, and we’d like to make this clear: Yes, it can. Your floor must be rock solid, a cement floor is a perfect substrate. If your floor is old and squeaky, it has to be repaired to rock solidness, and then yes! create yourself a masterpiece!
The facts about Glass-Tiled Floors: Official testing done by the American Society for Testing and Materials has shown glass tile to be durable; they rate between 5 and 6 on the Measure of Hardness scale and can hold up to 420 pounds. Glass tiles rank 137.5 on the Abrasion Index. Glass floor tiles are reinforced to increase their durability and additional surface treatments are available for tiles to be installed in high traffic areas. Glass tiles used as floors in wet areas can be treated with a slip-resistant sealant to reduce the slipperiness of wet tiles. Thorough planning and proper installation make glass tiles a great flooring option for kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, patios, and any other room or area in and outside of the home.
Once you’ve gotten past the fear of putting glass tiles below your feet you can let your creative juices flow. Glass tiles can be used artistically, to create intricate detailing or more simply as a water-resistant flooring option. Glass tiles make beautiful mosaic entryway floors, and are a practical solution for wet areas like bathroom and pool-side patios. For a truly striking effect, consider running lights below bright, iridescent tiles, a great choice for bars, clubs, and around pools.
